Overlooking the Kohala Coast and always in good condition, the Village Course at Waikoloa, is certainly one of the most popular courses in Hawaii for good reason. This little slice of heaven features great views, interesting holes and very playable holes that golfers of all levels can enjoy. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., who also crafted the Waikoloa Beach Course, the par-72 layout plays to 6,812 yards from the tips. It has generous fairways and well-bunkered greens, but consistent with Jones' design philosophy, there's always an opening for anyone who needs to run the ball up onto the greens. Some pin positions will require golfers to go over bunkers to get close, but the safe approach can usually be played between the bunkers. The course, which opened in 1972, has three other sets of tees, starting at 5,500 yards. It features a nice variety of par 3s, and both nines end with par-5s, including the dogleg-left 18th, which is a good risk-reward hole with a large pond in front of the green. In addition to the golf course, Waikola's Village Course also has excellent practice facilities, which includes a grass driving range, short-game area and practice green Inside the clubhouse, you'll find a well-stocked golf shop with the latest in logoed apparel, accessories and equipment. Lessons are also available at Waikoloa, and you can also rent clubs there. Across from the golf shop is Johnny's Restaurant, which offers a full menu and bar, big screen TVs and plenty of outdoor seating.
