Old Oak Country Club in Homer Glen, Illinois is a beautiful historic Chicagoland golf course that harks back to the golden age of golf course architecture. The course, located 30 miles southwest of Chicago, debuted in 1926, and though it has been altered and enhanced over the years, it still delights players with its rustic charm and natural beauty. Oak Oak Country Club rambles on a site that is devoid of housing and populated by wonderful ancient oaks, willows, and hickory trees. A creek also runs through the golf grounds. The course, which is fairly flat and very walkable, earns raves for its varied layout that is full of intriguing holes. Fours sets of tee markers give players distance options as short as 4,823 yards and as long as 6,460 yards on this par-71 routing. Elevated tee boxes provide good looks at the challenges ahead, and elevated greens make for challenging targets. The most constant threat to par at Old Oak Country Club comes from the trees. Not only do they line the narrow fairways on tee shots, they also pinch in to block or obscure approach shots to the greens. Accuracy and placement are essential here, but length is also key on a number of par 4s that come in at just under 400 yards from the tips as well as two of the three par 5s. Besides the trees, rough and strategically placed bunkers also toughen the challenge. The back nine, which has more water in play, is the side that can blow up a scorecard. Generally, though, Old Oak Country Club is a fun and manageable test for players of diverse skill levels. The greens are somewhat small and elevated and they tilt from back to front. Practice facilities at Old Oak Country Club include a driving range, two chipping areas, a sand bunker, four putting greens, and a 70-yard hole. The clubhouse features a fully stocked pro shop, locker rooms, a banquet room for outings, and a lounge with a full bar and patio seating.
