Oak Quarry Golf Club near Riverside, California has been thrilling Southern California golfers ever since it opened in 2002. Set in an old quarry and enveloped by the Jurupa Mountains, this club, located 50 miles east of Los Angeles and just 13 miles from Ontario International Airport, is one of the most unique and spectacular playing fields in all of California. Golf magazine rated it no. 89 on its 2021-2022 list of the Top 100 Courses You Can Play. Over the years Oak Quarry Golf Club has appeared on Golf Advisor s list of the Top Courses in California and in 2013 The National Golf Course Association chose it as its Course of the Year. Lee Schmidt and Brian Curley, with assistance from PGA Tour Champions star Gil Morgan, laid out the course masterfully in the historic Jensen Quarry, a now dormant treasure trove of native rocks that once supplied 88 different minerals used in the construction of roads, large buildings and private residences in the Los Angeles area. Oak Quarry Golf Club spreads out in a wonderfully secluded, rugged realm. Except for a couple of holes, there are no houses in sight. The routing passes through the quarry, runs alongside mountain slopes and white limestone monoliths, and delves into canyons. You ll find great variety, with a never-ending succession of strategic design features such as split fairways, blind shots, steep-faced bunkers etched into hillsides, greens tucked on plateau ridges, and rollicking multi-tiered putting surfaces. Risk takers revel in opportunities to cut the corner of canyons and ravines.?Oak Quarry Golf Club is a tough challenge, but less accomplished players will thrill to it just as low handicappers do. The playing field is wider than it looks from the tee boxes. Also, if you miss around the greens there s often a way to make an up and down recovery. Memorable holes follow one after another, but the signature test is a downhill par 3 called Spinel Slide. A pond from the quarry fronts the peninsula green on this sublimely beautiful one-shotter that is backdropped by the sheer white face of a rock formation. Practice facilities at Oak Quarry Golf Club include a full driving range, a chipping green and practice bunker, and two putting greens. The clubhouse is home to a full-service pro shop and a restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch every day (and dinner sometimes) and showcases the spectacular surroundings.
